“Integrating Inexpensive Digital Microscopy into Biology Inquiry Learning”

Presenter: Dr. Brian R. Shmaefsky, Professor of Biology and Service Learning Coordinator, Lone Star College, Kingwood, TX

Description: Digital microscopy combines a microscope and a computer allowing students to view specimens with the ability to manipulate and quantitate the microscopic images. It is an exciting application of microscopy principles for a variety of samples including live mounts, household dust, soil samples, and prepared slides. Inquiry-based instruction can be achieved using simple to complex instructional activities using forensic microscopy principles. This interactive presentation will demonstrate field-tested classroom case studies, lecture demonstrations, and laboratory activities that reinforce student content knowledge of scientific method, general biology principles and environmental science. See the new Swift M3-F forensic microscope and Motic Trace software in action!
