State Shows: Texas (CAST) November 6-8

Sponsored by Swift Optical Instruments:

Title: Basic Microscopy and Digital Imaging 101

Basic Description:

Teachers should spend time teaching, not struggling with new equipment. This workshop, sponsored by Swift Optical Instruments, will teach you basic microscopy and digital imaging techniques. Bring your questions and we’ll provide solutions!

Session Abstract:

This workshop will provide the equipment and materials to allow participants to experience a hands-on approach to learning basic microscopy and digital imaging techniques in a classroom setting. The emphasis will be on how to use Swift microscopes and Swift Digital imaging products, including the latest Swift Cam II software.

Many times teachers have access to microscopes and digital imaging cameras, but are not familiar with their operation. This workshop will give instruction on basic microscope use, the best digital device to use for certain applications, and how to use the Swift imaging software for classroom purposes.

Participants will leave with sample lesson plans and tips for use in their own classrooms.

*Consult the Conference workshop/class schedule for time and place of these workshops.

NABT Workshop

Title: "Inquiry-based Microscopy: The Case of the Missing Cockatoo"
Presenters: Dr. Connie Russell - Angelo State University, San Angelo, TX / Cynthia Syverson-Mercer

Description: This workshop will allow participants to experience an inquiry-based laboratory that teaches basic microscopy and digital imaging concepts, while at the same time allowing students to "solve" a whodunit-type crime! Participants will leave with "evidence" bag samples, basics for prepping the laboratory and teaching tips. This workshop will feature Swift Microscopes in action.

NABT Corporate Workshop

Title: Organelles of the Day II

Presenters: Whitney Hagins, Science Department Head, Lexington High School, Lexington, MA
Ken Bateman, Weston Middle School, Weston, MA
Cynthia Syverson-Mercer

Description: This workshop, sponsored by Swift Optical Instruments, is an innovative approach to teaching about cell structure while learning proper microscope and digital microscopy techniques. Traditional teaching approaches tend to lead to chaos in the classroom. This workshop addresses these issues through the use of Swift microscopes and Swift Digital imaging products. This is part two of the popular workshop sponsored by Swift Optical Instruments at last year's NABT. Join us this year for a new approach. Get "DIGI" with Swift and use your "digination" in the classroom!
